Do You Really Want to Be on My List?

by mitz on November 30, 2011

Today I cleaned out my list and deleted over a 1,000 email addresses. I am absolutely sick of people signing up when they are not really interested to receive any emails from me. Therefore I am going to change the way I gather my subscribers by sorting the good from the bad hopefully before the signup process. I am no longer interested in numbers, but only quality subscribers. I guess I am turning the tables here.

I actually wanted to delete my list completely and start again but I had to refrain, only for my loyal subscribers.

Do you really want to be on my list?
I am very fussy about who I have on my list and I have decided that I do not want to entice people with freebies to acquire their email addresses, so if you qualify then please feel free to sign up.

This list is for you…

  • I only want subscribers that want to learn how to build WordPress websites to make money online.
  • You are not afraid of trying something new.
  • You are a positive person.
  • You want to change your life.
  • If you want to see how I make $5,000 a month from one website then you need to be on this list.

This list is not for you if…

  • I have to be straight with you right now. If you are signing up to get the free ebooks then shame on you! If that is your reason then please do not subscribe.
  • If you are already making more than $10,000 a month online you do not need to be on anyone’s list. Just ramp up what you’re doing now!
  • If you are a negative person with no goals for the future.
  • If you do not believe that any of this is true.
  • If you are signing up to waste my time and yours
  • If you know you will not open the emails anyway!

Why I only want genuine subscribers on my list

  1. Every subscriber on my list costs money, therefore it is a waste of money when I have people on my list that do not open the e-mails.
  2. I do not want to be putting all this work into my e-mail list when only half the subscribers read it.
  3. I hate the feeling that I am talking to no one??
  4. Why should I try my hardest to get people on the list when they do no belong there?

Now I need your help

I need you to tell me what you want from my emails. What did you expect and what did you get.. I am betting that half the problem is me not giving my list the information they want. So now I want you to tell me what you want to see.

I might know how to build website and make money but I am not sure what information to step back to. Please tell many in the comment section below what you would like to see on the perfect e-mail list about building WordPress websites to make money?

I am addicted to internet marketing and making money online. Who wouldn't want to live that life? I started out with one website as a hobby and now have over 20. Building websites and making money online is not that hard. You have to actually take action to make money...that is the biggest hurdle! :)

Hey Mitz;
I thought you had this covered some time back. If your list is topping out at the point in which your autoresponder service is charging an arm and a leg for a few extra names on your list then you have to weed out the non-responsive ones. It’s just business. I mean if you ran an ice cream shop and the majority of visitors were there for the free samples how long could you stay in business? Right! You can segment your email list by moving those names over that have not opened up a message for say……3 months or even the last 5 in a series. And just monetize the dickens out of that less interested list. It will go one of two ways, you make extra $$$ or you will scare of those dead beat surfers.

So what am I looking for in an IM guru’s list?
1. option on how often I want to be solicited.
2. Less free stuff. That’s right, less. If I am to be a fan of your IM knowledge and experience then I would expect
to pay a few dollars here and there to keep you pumping out quality and focused content to help me become an
IMer myself.
3. Illustrated examples of what works. Like that post you did on a hosting review site/page that brought in $700.00 per month.
I still have that post saved until I can put it to use on my niche marketing site. Great idea.
Thanks and keep up the good works!

you must provide an option to your subscribers that how often they want to receive your emails/newsletter. This practice will make the experience better for both you & your subscribers. Good Luck

I have like 400 I need to get rid of.. Maybe even up in the 7′s..

Hey MITZ;
Just this morning I was sifting through my list of Internet Marketing information providers deciding who to unsubscribe from. Then I got your email about you discarding folks from your own list. I hope that in the near future I have that problem to deal with. If I did I think I would look at it as a blessing. Maybe even try to separate the freebie seekers from those genuinely interested in learning from your success. Of course as you mentioned the cost of paying for an autoresponder ain’t cheap. I know I want to understand how to earn $5,000 + per month from running a website business. So today I am taking a very important step in that direction. I am removing myself from all those Gurus that are ONLY interested in “selling” and not in “teaching”. If they truly loved what they do and it was a passion instead of a “job” then the money would come. Right! Keep up the good work, I do read your post. Thanks.
P.S. Good Niche Marketing is a site I am building about how the Internet Marketing business is really like the Nigerian scam. We pay and pay and pay and never do get any satisfactory results. It is a long list of players and your name is NOT among them. Keep me on your list.

Oh thanks for all the details Stanley. You are right that I cannot bare to sell sell sell and I do work the other way round.. Many Gurus are only out for sales and I am off their lists too. I don’t need any more tools, I need to get work done, not waste time on their hypnotics videos.

I know many people that have paid thousands for courses and never did any of it. Then they keep buying time after time.. That’s not what will help. I have been into the back door of all Brett Mcfalls products, Stephen Pieces, and many more.. I was not impressed with any of them.. Some cost 10,000 to join.

I recently bought Steve’s http://www.stevescottsite.com/45-email-marketing for $5. I want to make my list soooooo good that people will be begging to be on it! It is another thing I have to master and will. This was a great buy, didn’t need an expensive to course to see how to do email marketing. (the right way)

Hi Mitz,
I am delighted to be on your list, I just don’t get to read all the emails at once so they are in a line for me.
A few comments if I may. I would wonder whether the ‘gift’ of the Ebook is in the right place. Consider that an item is a ‘gift’ or a ‘bribe’ depending on where it is in the sales process. While I see that most websites get you to sign up before they give you something, it’s really like the free chook. I tried this at a trade show a few years back and the quality of our leads were crap to say the least. I then worked out our time spent and the conversion rate. Suffice to say we don’t do trade shows any more, but we stopped offering a ‘free’ or ‘win this’ anything. The leads weren’t worth it.
It may be a longer road to gather leads another way (let’s face it, this is what they are) but it just might be more productive especially when people will talk about how good you are. I have read through the very long list of comments and each has expressed the desire to stay with you so that says something.
The other point I would like to raise is one I have emailed you about before and it has occurred to me that it is almost the same for every business person. Once you enter an industry and have some knowledge of it, your perspective changes and it is difficult to remember exactly just how it was for you before. On the other hand, someone like me is almost lost….like eating an elephant, but where do you start? What sites like yours does is give hope and an overview for those of us still struggling with “WTF is a plugin” etc. As long as it is done with integrity and is genuine, the results will come.
We are much more transparent than we think we are. Love your work!

Regards

Graham

Hi Graham
I often have to think about where I started so I can go back to the beginning and explain things… You woke me up to the fact that I was not actually going back far enough.. I remember the days when I thought WTF too and wondered what a plugin and widgets was??? Who would name anything a widget anyway? As you know I am working on the basic things I told you about..I also started on this page: http://wordpress-websitebuilder.com/wordpress-website-basics/ and would love to know your ideas about that..

I agree that the free aspect can sometimes kill sales but in the internet world there are other goals to achieve from free stuff.. For example..you can get people to plus one you or share your content to enter a competition. Also you can give away free ebooks to gain trust, and also have affiliate links in..These things also bring traffic..There are many things to build besides conversions that will ultimately lead to conversions anyway. That is how I work.

Reply

Graham December 9, 2011 at 11:05 pm

The truth is that you can never go back and have the same understanding as before you started. I have the same issues dealing with clients now. Just how do I have the perspective of a newbie to my industry?
I also understand there are reasons why you would give stuff away and I agree….although I have no idea what you meant by getting people to ‘plus one’ or ‘share content’. See, I just showed you what level I am at. I know bugger all! But it seems a fine line between gaining email addresses and having too many. I see everything as a process that can be altered so there must be a way to balance it.
I’ll check out that other page.
Cheers, Graham

With all due respect, I’d remove from the “do not join” list people who already earn $10K per month. Yes, scaling up is the best advice at this stage; however, in my view one can learn from somebody already earning $5K per month.

Now to answer your question as to what I want to read from you …
1. Breakdown of your earnings each month (i.e. earnings from list, affiliate promotions, Adsense, etc.).
2. Timeline of earnings history.
3. Highest earning types of posts (i.e. reviews, in-context affiliate links, e-mails to subscribers).
4. Worst performing posts.

I guess, what I find highly informative is true-life details about what works and doesn’t work for you.

FYI, I though your published weekly schedule was super cool.

I am not worried about having the $10k thing there… I am actually hoping to clean out more emails so if this is the point that does it then that is fine…

Great stuff about what you want to see…
I can do some of this… But the problem is that I have to be careful with what details I share about particular pages..as in the highest earning pages as I have big competitors who would desperately love to know this information. The thing that is holding me back is finding the right page that I am willing to sacrifice.
As for the timeline of earnings history, this is possible but takes work to organize into something that makes sense. That is a great idea though, in fact all of them are really good ideas.

Hey Mitz,
Education first and last.
I am a fan as you know. I believe you are one of the most transparent people in the im field.
Even the imer’s that how much they make do not really tell you how they do it. They feed you crumbs in order to get you to keep coming back.
Then, it is non-stop selling. They plug every product out there and tell you why you have to have it.
The emails I open and read are educational. I’m going to learn something or at least be motivated in some way. The ones that are only selling the ‘next best thing’ get read only if the copy is compelling. I have never bought a product that was pitched in email. I know I’m not alone.
If I do it will A) Be something that has real value B) Be bought through someone’s link that isn’t a shameless plugger.
I would definitely buy through one of your links as you offer great value on this site and the forum. You have earned my business.
In closing, educate my friend. Keep teaching us to fish, whether here or through emails. You are brilliant enough to mix it up with beginner and advanced techniques.
Hot topics: Building backlinks, Wordpress plugins that make life easy (free and paid), CASE STUDIES (this one is huge in most of our books).
A proper case study will be transparent for it to be beneficial for the readers (as you well know).
I’ve read case studies on some BIG sites only to learn they employed some behind the scenes methods that they wouldn’t share. It’s like showing someone how to make a cake but forgetting to mention a key ingredient. Not going to turn out too well.
That’s my two dollars worth. Oh yes, I enjoy your emails :)

Reply

mitz December 3, 2011 at 8:43 am

Ha Ha Ha
That transparency can get me in trouble sometimes… But I hate getting fed crumbs and I refuse to do that!!! People often say to me “wow that could be a book” because I do give some piece of information that a book normally would not..

I absolutely love sharing information and I like it even better when people tell me they are actually learning something! That is the best reward possible!

Thanks for you amazing tips… I see you have written CASE STUDIES in capital letters…!!!

Please let me stay on your list because you are one of the few marketers that teaches me. You are also one of the few that makes me believe.

Just before I received your email regarding this post, I had just unsubscribed from several lists because all send out 3 to 5 emails promoting WSO or email swaps. Ridiculous. Some think that is proper and some people do respond to that kind of marketing. But I don’t.

Last week, I unsubscribed from another marketer that I had bought stuff from. I did so because in a list building webinar, he stated how if someone doesn’t buy from him, then he doesn’t want them on his list. Because they are costing him money. So I unsubscribed, because at what point does how much I have spent with him entitles me to be on his list? Maybe I’m costing him now, since I haven’t bought from him in 2 months?

I have been on lists where I didn’t buy for several months and then when I did, I spent over $100.

I will never forget what happened over 3 years ago. I had just bought a book (spent about $35) to be mailed to me. The marketer I bought it from (Mike Dillard) sent an email to his list regarding another of his products. In it he stated that if you did not buy it, then he didn’t want you on his list. In fact, I can pretty much quote him: “Just unsubscribe now.” That shocked me and upset me. I know it shouldn’t have, but I had just bought something else from him and to hear him be so rude to a customer (me) bothered me. That day, I unsubscribed from more lists.

I know you didn’t mention being a buyer from you, but I do understand that to really listen to you and try to learn from you involves an investment sometimes.
So just to let you know, I will be buying AuthorityPro through your affiliate link as soon as I can. I really liked your post: http://wordpress-websitebuilder.com/2-top-squeeze-page-generators/

Hi Mitz

Just found your blog. Looks like you have some great info. I recently just went through my list and deleted anyone that hasn’t opened an e-mail in the last 5 months. This seemed to cut my list down so i didn’t have to spill over into the next highest subscriber category. I’ll have to keep on top of this since it’s no point in paying for people that aren’t getting it or don’t want it.

mitz December 3, 2011 at 8:05 am

Yes I have gone over many subscribers levels and even when you clean them off and drop down a level the money stays at the higher rate..

So I am not saving money by cleaning people off…I just want to use my money for the right people.

It appears to me that the problem lies in ‘Subscribe to Our Newsletter’ checkbox. This box comes auto checked for every user and people don’t bother to uncheck this box when posting comments. You should change its status to unchecked by default to avoid having people in your list that have accidentally subscribed to it.

Reply

mitz December 3, 2011 at 8:01 am

I decided to remove the check box for now… I am serious about not wanting anyone on my list that doesn’t really want to be there.. I am very happy that everyone pointed that out to me, as I do not see this check box as I am logged in all the time.

Hi mitz. I see that your very serious about this matter. Well, of course you should! You do not want to waste your time sending emails then they won’t read it. As for me, I would really feel the same just like what you felt. Oh, by the way I would want to receive an email about email marketing. I just don’t know how to start, I’ve read several articles yet I’m still confused. Thanks mitz. Looking forward on your future blog posts too, I’m sure you will be able to share more.

I guess that the problem lies on the layout of this blog. In my opinion, you should place the “Subscribe to Our Newsletter” check box above the submit button. This will make the people read it so you can avoid having people in your list that have accidentally subscribe to it.

On another note, I admire this action of yours. It’s not just on the premise of practicality but also for the sake of people who are truly interested in what you’ve got to share.

Hey Mitz,

Me again! (I told you I was getting hooked on your stuff…)

Well more than a rant, for me this list pruning you’re currently doing would be a standard procedure right?

To be perfectly honest I just started my site (or blog, like most people say) and I didn’t even bothered to put a capture form but after like a couple of weeks I decided to put one somewhere on the sidebar widgets.

I didn’t offer anything apart to receive “blog updates” nothing more, nothing less.

It was fun that after a few days, people started leaving their address there!

For me it was a big step forward since I have never captured emails before (I’m a lousy marketer)

So fast forward, I have a VERY small list, but I’m guessing that they all got interested in joining because in the first place, they were not getting anything in return (besides my “amazing” updates lol)

So to not rant about my blog and my sad little form, I just wanted to let you know that from your writings, thoughts and this particular post, I think it’d be cool to be on your list.

So to those who are missing your emails, I’d say, GET RID OF THEM!

Much better to have a smaller list with people that really like your stuff, than to have thousands of people collecting eBooks online.

Take care and speak soon!

I am not into sqeezing money from my list..I just want people to read my emails for a purpose.

Hi Mitz
I definitely want to stay on your list – I always open your emails and read the post although I don’t always comment – sometimes I don’t have much to say and know that you don’t just want “great post” comments – they are a pain although sometimes that is all you want to say, unfortunately it does attract spammers if allowed!
OK. This is something new for me, I have been teaching myself for a year now so your site is fabulous and really helps to fill the gaps from being self taught. I definitely want to change my life – aka leave a paid job and do this – and boy $5000 a month would do it for me, bring it on.
What I like from your site is all the ideas for SEO which is what I am up to in the learning process. As things can change pretty quickly, it is great to read about changes, one example is not submitting your site to hundreds of directories but a few targeted ones and the growing importance of quality content in the Google algorithms. It is great to read about the Google updates and those changes and how they affect us. I also love to read about the plug-ins and other tools that can be of great use – I have asked for SEO Pressor for Xmas so will be getting that very soon – a long time coming, but thanks to your great posts and videos I was finally convinced that I am at the stage where I can certainly use that tool and have a reasonable idea about what to do with it!
I think I must have most of your free ebooks and they are excellent, but I see them as a bonus for joining your site rather than an inducement. It’s a bit of a thrill every now and again to get an email to say there is a new ebook, but if you never did another freebie I would still like to retain membership to your site.
I also enjoy your guest bloggers as they all have something to say in well written and informative articles and sometimes a bit different to what you write about or a different slant.
Like Paul, I appreciate the fact that you don’t send us constant emails from your new best friend with the latest amazing money making tool! And when I want to buy a tool, I come back to the site that sold me on it – I reckon if somebody has done the work they deserve the commission!
So thanks Mitz, as somebody still on the learning curve, I really appreciate your hard work and enjoy the community comments which are also a good learning tool :)

Hi Jan
WOW thanks for your comments and thanks for opening my emails. I am excited that you mentioned my free ebooks as I really try to put great information in them. Now I want to make MORE!!! I actually have a plan to cover everything with those books, and I mean all..

I always try to avoid the sales pitch as I enjoy real information instead. One Guru that disappointed me was John Chow. He now sends email saying “hey look at my friends new thing that made him $5,000 in one day” … I enjoyed his other emails until he did that once too many times..

Anyway from what I am hearing I should put the same kind of info in my emails as I do on the blog…but with some juicy extras.

Hi Mitz
I quickly reach for the delete button when people start pitching all the time. I have no problems with people who use the products so that they can genuinely say – this is good, this is how I use it give it a go and people like yourself and Ben who give a wealth of ideas and free information as well!

If you put the same information into your emails people may not bother to visit your site then so it’s really hard to know what to do there!!

Very exciting about the ebooks as well!

Why I want to be on your list -
(1) Have been reading this and your computer tips website and you give good information
(2) I have subscribed to some lists that every second email is selling something.
I unscribe from those.
(3) I subscribe to other lists that give good information that is not avaliable on their blog and occasionally sell something. I buy from those.
I am guessing that your list is in the # 3 style based on your post wanting real readers of your emails.
Also, I do agree with Scott that you may be getting some people who when they comment, don’t realise that they have just subscribed to your list.

At one time, I was contemplating to allow people on an email list for a monthly payment. That’s actually possible because in that rare niche, people don’t know much about blog, rss readers, etc. Some of them might have even paid. But somehow, I decided against it and allowed people to sign up for free. Even now, I might bring back that idea after I reach a certain number of email subscribers. People need to understand the value of something given to them. And they better pay up if they want that value.

I think the problem is when someone leaves a comment on this blog, the subscribe to newsletter button has already been checked. Your Computer Tips blog doesn’t have that. And the commentator does not really care about that. May be you can try re-positioning your ” Subscribe to Our Newsletter ” option for better results. What visitor always want is free. We can not deny that.

Free is not what this blogger wants!! By the time that you collect all the free things that people are offering to entice you to join, you end up with hundreds of PDF files and no time to read them anyway! Or you read all the free stuff and don’t have time to do any marketing! I think the free stuff to get people in is pretty overated but I do appreciate some great targeted stuff occasionally from the people that I follow – that’s a bonus. If people only join for the free stuff, chances are they are not going to become active members of your community anyway as they are not really interested in what you are doing. Also, a lot of “gurus” once you are on their list bomard you with the next best thing from their new best friend on a daily or weekly basis – they don’t offer stuff that they themselves have used and can genuinely promote as Mitz does.
