Guest Blogging in a Competitive Niche

by mitz on May 23, 2011

From the perspective of an Internet marketing or SEO standpoint, guest blogging is an excellent concept, perfect for any small to medium size business to be able to take their website rankings to the top in a manner that is totally white hat and will provide stability within the SERPS.

Website ranking strategies and evolving algorithms stand as the single most important factors any Internet marketer or Webmaster will need to keep abreast of, especially if you rely heavily on organic search traffic. Now, more than ever, understanding and mastering Internet search technologies should be at the top of any business owner’s agenda.

Recently, Google sent a clear and decisive message to each and every one of the millions of website owners worldwide. This message is not something that’s new or that serious Internet marketers did not already know. This new OFFICIAL warning from Google, delivered via the panda update (Google’s algorithm change), simply rams home the message for people who decided not to listen in the first place.

Considering SEO Strategies in a Competitive Niche

Considering the common SEO strategies utilized by offshore link building sweat shops, evolving stringent search engine algorithms have made many such link building methods useless. What’s your honest opinion, do you consider it fair that a website that has mindlessly robotically built thousands of forum profile backlinks or copy and pasted the same website description to a thousand directories via some automated software tool deserves to be on the first page of Google?

The type of website that deserves to be ranked number one for its niche should be reserved for a website whose owner has taken the time to carry out research and analysis about a unique topic of interest. SEO is not a competition as to who can build the most amount of backlinks in the shortest amount of time.

Google does not hide behind it’s own philosophy. They even have their own blogspot to keep everyday webmasters informed as to how to keep up with the latest Internet search technologies. Guest blogging ticks all the boxes when it comes to satisfying both Google and search engine visitors. The principle behind guest blogging attracts legitimate and targeted visitors because of the uniqueness of the content, as well as providing the author with the best type of backlink of all – from a totally unique source via a quality authentic website.

Let’s take a look at how you can come up with many different topics (whilst still maintaining relevancy) and article ideas so you can continue to publish new and unique content via the guest blogging platform:

Finding New Angles for your Competitive Niche

Here’s a simple idea. Go and grab yourself a pen and paper (yes some of us still use these) and draw a basic web diagram. From here, expand your thought processes to gather other items that are relevant to your particular niche or product.

Guest Blogging in a Competitive Niche

As an example, if your website sells floor rugs, add the first layer of your web diagram around the floor rug. What’s related to floor rugs? Carpet, tiles, furniture, blinds, curtains, wall paintings – think of some items that compliment a floor rug. After you’ve built the first layer of your web diagram, start working on the second layer (items that relate to your first layer, and so on. Before too long you’ll have loads of neat ideas and topics to guest blog about which are still relevant to floor rugs.

If you were to consider a competitive niche to write about, online dating, for example, is right up there with the toughest of online industries. There are a zillion rehashed free dating sites articles about dating tips polluting the Internet. “Here we go again, another online dating sites advice article, so what” – hit the delete button! So instead, rather than write about online dating tips, day-after-day, think about more innovative topics like dating statistics, dating applications, Facebook dating apps, self help and self confidence topics, diverse dating cultures, news stories and press releases, relationships – then build on these for even more things to write about – using your web diagram.

Creativity is the key, start thinking outside the box and diversify your angle! Guest blogging in a competitive niche is not something to be afraid of. Here is a free guest blogging ebook to give you some more ideas.

Guest blogging is really one of the leading techniques in optimization. Having layers and adding layers into it is a similar concept of link wheel. I already tried this method and it’s really effective especially for keywords in medium competition niche. I never tried it with high competition niche but i guess it would still work as long as you have many layers.

Hey Mitz, Nice post.

For making that diagram for good ideas I thought it would be a good idea to use Google.
Google used to have an option that it would show you related terms in bubbles/circles. But I can’t find it anymore. Do you have any idea what I’m talking about?

That is the wonder wheel which no longer exists. Anyway take a look at the related seaches lists in Google..They hold the same info as the Wonder wheel. If you press on a keyword you can get another set of keywords drilled down…

The wonder wheel exactly!
Related searches list is less fun than the wonder wheel. Just the name alone WONDER wheel haha.
Got to love it.

Great tips, publishers and search engines can use your expanding angle tips. The guest blogging is truly an ideal for any small to medium size organizations to succeed. I think it’s a common problem for many webmasters to achieve the same search engine rankings.

@Jenny – has the right idea. I too guest blog for clients and I do quite a bit of it. So as you can imagine creativity is key, as is angle. I usually write lists, which tend to do well on most sites, plus they’re just plain fun to write. (and read)

Good tips, Matt.

Cheers!

Great post! I indeed a lot of idea and tips you’ve shared. When you make guest blogging, make sure that your website has a lot to offer to your audience or they will end up nothing.

I’ve been doing guest blogging for a while now and it’s been working quite fine for a few number of targeted websites. The only factor everyone should consider when doing guest blogging is providing a great content in the guest post as well as the pages you’re linking to.

Hi Mitz, great post.

I have started a website in a really competitive niche (Bingo) and there is not a hope in hell of me getting a guest post on a bingo blog. In my niche every link has price!

For that reason, i have diversified and have attempted to get links from blogs that are only slightly related. For example with the bingo niche, i have secured some guest posts on women’s blogs, seniors blogs, games blogs etc.

If you can relate your site to other sites slightly outside your niche you can do well.

Great post btw, thanks!

for me, if your niche is already so competitive, you do not need to enter any further layers. better focus on your main niche and build your site according to that

Great post! But be careful when doing guest post, make sure that your website has a lot to offer to your audience or they will end up nothing. That’s why I am not doing it (yet). Btw, good points you’ve got!
