Search Engines. Love it or Hate it, they are here to stay. So why not embrace them? It’s not easy especially if you have something against them eg when they caused your website’s ranking to drop dramatically in recent months as a result of “new SEO ruling”, such as the Panda and Penguin updates.
SEO or Search Engine Optimization, is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. It is about how you improve your website to the point when your website is able to attract an increasing number of visitors from the search engines.
Sounds great, right? So, how do we go about it? There are many areas that you can concentrate on from leveraging on social media websites to posting more frequently to the posts contents (which is what we are going to discuss today)!
Tips To Writing Great SEO Content
A few years ago, writing SEO content meant a whole lot different from today. And a lot of it has to do with Google’s changes in its ranking algorithm. With the release and recent updates of Google Panda and Google Penguin in 2011 and 2012, many older rulings are no longer applicable.
To put it briefly, it places more importance on how much experience your website is creating, rather than how many keywords you can stuff into your posts. It’s about creating a website that your visitors like and trust and are willing to share.
How do we do that? Here are some tips.
How The Posts Are Written
Do bear in mind that there are more and more great articles on the Internet these days. You need to stand out with not just awesome contents but also properly written articles. Things like spelling and grammar are important. A couple of mistakes are forgivable but an article filled with errors will hurt your reputation and ranking badly.
Make sure your articles are friendly with short paragraphs and with easily understandable language. Don’t use too many industry-specific jargons (unless if you are targeting your industry’s professionals) and if you do, it’ll be good to include a description of the jargons used. This is all a step in the right direction to creating quality content.
Try to make your posts as interesting as possible by using images and written in a more conversational way. Take me for example. I don’t care much about insurance and how it works. But if I spot an article on insurance and have plenty of bit-sized facts that’s written in a fun and humorous way, I’m more inclined to share it with my friends.
Keywords are still an important element. So, research well before you write your posts. Google AdWords is a good place to start. Try to find keywords that are high on the search list and yet has low competition, ie not many people writing about it.
At the same time, find different ways of expressing the same idea. Google is now able to recognize the similarities between different word groups.
Remember not to stuff your posts with too many keywords. Use them sparingly, around 2 – 5 in a single post perhaps.
Managing links is another way to build your SEO. However, no bad links and do take care not to purchase backlinks or link to spam pages or you will be flagged as a spam website too!
Always be extra careful where you link to. It’s fine to link to a website to show where you had obtain certain information (to give credits) or to inter-link to your own post to provide more detailed information.
Another way some of us build links is to link bait. Link baiting is to build links naturally across the Internet. It is hard work as you will need to create contents interesting enough to encourage your readers to share and link to your website. It could be really informative contents or even controversial ones too. Powerful images, contests and infographics are also popular and frequently used to tempt your readers to link to your contents.
Last but not least, the content itself. Write something that you are familiar with. If you wish to attempt to write something not in your area of expertise, then it would pay if you did some researches beforehand. This way, you will be able to write more convincingly. You may even be amazed with the information you find. Do bear in mind though, that certain facts may be wrong or outdated so it’s best to check your facts first.
Don’t copy others word for word. That’s plagiarism and no one likes their hard work to be copied without permission or proper credit!
These days, having lots of facts and a great topic does not guarantee you a good amount of traffic. SEO plays a major role in bringing in the traffic, but definitely not black-hat SEO, cloaking and deliberately duplicate content methods! There are many other things that you need to look into also, as highlighted above.
I do hope these SEO tips are able to help you in boosting up your SEO. Do share your experiences in the comments section below.
