Link Wheel Strategies Explained

by mitz on June 11, 2011

Building a link wheel is a very powerful SEO strategy to improve website rankings in the search engines.

How To Create A Link Wheel

Simply put it, link wheels harness the power of popular Web 2.0 websites to drive targeted backlinks to your site. This works because high ranking sites like Facebook, Squidoo, WordPress, etc. give you the chance to publish your own content and also add backlinks to your content.

Google simply adores these Web 2.0 sites and you’ll see that often times your posted content will rank very well on its own. Getting links to your own site from at least five of these sites is very good for your web presence and basically stands at the basis of the link wheel strategy.

Choose the sites where you post your content –write at least 200 words of unique content and include one link to your site and another link to your blog. These link wheels generate backlinks to your site’s main page, which give your website a strong boost in the search engines.

Continually Update Your Link Wheels

Invest time into each link wheel you build so you can avoid spending unnecessary time creating each one at a time after they have been either deleted or outdated. Check your wheel after 2-3 weeks and add new content. Have a sneak peak at Google News for your targeted keywords and add about 100 words of new content to each page. You could also make a YouTube video or some additional content.

Never Close Your Link Wheel

When building a link wheel, typically you would start at Site 1 and end at Site 12. Now, instead of having Site 12 link back to Site 1, make it different: link Site 1 to Site 5 and Site 5 to Site 8 etc. And you can get even better results if you have an advanced link wheel that goes across article directories like EzineArticles.com.

How To Monitor Your Backlinks

There are many ways you can check the number of backlinks to your site. For example, Firefox provides an extension that allows you to right-click and check the number of backlinks of a website. Plus, you have several different browser toolbars that you can use (e.g. Google, Yahoo, etc.) and check our this information.

Final thoughts…

Keep in mind the three major targets of any successful link building campaign:

-          search engines (for higher rankings)

-          visitors (for traffic)

-          readers of other sites (for word of mouth)

Make your content relevant and try to add value as much as you can. Google continually changes their ranking algorithm to put more emphasis on not only backlinks, but the actual content that accompanies the backlink.

Remember, link building is probably the important element in getting high ranks in all the major search engines, so you want to make sure that after spending all this time on link building you do it the right way.

On reading this article, i got a better idea about the link wheel, but when i read the user comments some of them are saying that google penalized their site. Can you let me know, whether the link wheel is white hat seo or black hat technique?

Thanks for the wonderful tips on Link Wheel. It is great way to get traffic and backlinks on the website.
A question comes that if I have to promote a keyword phrase then which link I have to put on it? Web 2.0 link or main site link?

A good article, explaining what are link wheel
Unfortunately, like Torry said, Link wheel now are heavily penalazide by Google, and it’s very difficult to build them without leaving a footprint that google could follow.
In addition,to prevent this, google has recently decrease the value of links from 2.0 website such as wordpress.com,squidoo,blogger and many more

Hi Albert..
Yes anything that is made with spam has been penalized.. My link wheels haven’t because they have original, great content..Everything comes down to this in the end.. People waste their time publishing junk.
As for the value of 2.0 links..If your content stands out then it can only be rewarded!

Mitz, thanks for your reply,
After the errors I didn’t suspect my comment to appear,
but it’s there. However I made a mistake with the keyword url. Forgot the ’4′.
It should be 4healthfitnessbeauty.com, same as in the comment.
I would really appreciate it if you can adjust that, or remove it and make the url in the comment ‘dofollow”.

Most of my websites are non-blogs, but I’m considering adding a few blogs
as content of blogs are faster indexed and ranked.
Maybe I can also do some guest posts at your blogs.

As a better alternative for article directories, I’m also in for exchanging unique
articles on various subjects, including a few dofollow links (1 per 150 words)
in a 3-way manner.

Other people reading this can email me at: guide4well [at] gmail [dot] com if they’re
interested.

PS this is my 3rd try.
First I put in a website which is nit a blog. Your script noted: a feed could not be found.

Then I put in a blog of mine, but again the message “a feed could not be found.”
Indeed I didn’t had a feed, but added it in the meantime.
Hope this time your system gets it.

Appreciate your information on linking etc.
I think it is very informative.
I have about 15 websites and some blogs which I also
use for linkwheel linking.
One of them is http://4healthfitnessbeauty.com – info on popular health fitness and beauty topics.

I don’t know about you but I find it hard to keep all the sites
uptodate. Wonder how you manage yours.

Thanks.

Ahh to keep up with it all??? Well I outsource some stuff…Not for this site though…I have gained help through guest posters here…
I still need to hire another virtual assistant but have been too busy getting article for a new website I am making…
I am starting a website but getting about 100 articles first…All scheduled and ready to go..When I start running out I will get more…but by that time I should be able to get guest posters on there….

This website is starting to need more work done..the problem with me is that I have a few really massive sites…and the main problem is answering comments..as I love chatting to people…LOL

link wheel truly is an advanced form of seo that anyone can do. However, there are simple things that you need to avoid in order for your link wheel to work, like not closing it as you mentioned.
I know duplicate content isn’t good, but would you use plrs or already published posts for your link wheel properties or is it better to have original content?….
Thanks Mitz.

Hmm Link Wheels
I do not stick to too many rules with Link wheeling nowdays and the reason I do not have to is because every article or post I do is original. Therefore I figure I can do what I like. Even if you re-write your posts or even a portion of a big one…(or outsource it)
The other thing I do stick to is to never link back to any properties in my link wheel. (from the main site) I also publish other peoples posts on my link wheel to make it look diverse. (if original)

I never reuse a post. I know this all works so I stick to it…

There are so many ways to do this and most of them work..

Yes, it is true, that Google punished many link wheels.

But I think that it heavily depends on the content. When you fill your link wheel with stupid spun articles, Google figures it out and decreases the value of these pages.

Providing quality and unique content will probably keep you from getting penalized, even though it is a link wheel.

Thanks for this tips.I’m doing link wheels since I started SEO 3 years ago and it really did a good job to my sites rankings. My technique in there was making link wheel without following a pattern. This week I would make a link wheel who has a linking pattern of 34215, and next week 42153 and so on. I always close my wheel and for me it is working. As a substitute for not closing your wheel is to make random linking.

Nice tips Jkar
I do not like to really follow a pattern either.. I get bored with the same old thing.

Hi Mitz. This looks like a really powerful strategy. Do you recommend we use only dofollow web2.0 sites? Or nofollow sites are fine too with the linkwheel strategy? Thanks!

I have my own list of places to get backlinks… For example I have a blogger blog, a wordpress blog, tumblr, Squidoo, Ezine articles, guest blog sites that take any post I submit, ..then I social bookmark, share, facebook all of these… I always change things around…For example I use different places when promoting different blog posts. I do not do the same thing all the time and it is not done automatically. I only do this for the posts on my websites that proved themselves to have potential.

I do include nofollow in this as diversity is the key.. Youtube is nofollow but it works well!
