Making Money While You Sleep – Is This True?

Is making money while you sleep even possible? Many new website builders ask this exact question as it seems too good to be true. It doesn’t help that we all know the old saying “If it seems to good to true, then it usually is”. Knowing this definitely puts a negative spin on making money while you sleep, but I can tell you that it does happen. I have been making money while I sleep for years now.

When my first email message popped into my inbox with the subject line “You have earned a commission”, an amazing sense of truth came to me. Wow it was true. You could make money while sleeping. I read this article by John Morrow about how he makes money while he sleeps. It reminded me of how lucky I am to do the same thing and I wanted to share my experiences.

Of course I have shown previously how I make money online with WordPress Websites but in this article I am trying to explain different montetization methods and how they create income while you sleep.

How do you get to make money while you sleep?

Well I guess the main way to make money while you sleep is to have something for people to buy any time of the day or night. If you are not selling anything, you cannot make the money.

The next thing is to make sure you do not have to physically be there to help the person make the purchase. Therefore a person can buy a product or service, pay for it and receive their goods, all without you doing a thing.

This does not mean you have to sell your own products either, as most affiliate sales are also hands off for you. All you have to do is get the person to buy, the rest is history. How amazing is that? It’s not like you have to stand in a shop and greet the customer, convince them to buy, and take their money. None of this is necessary on the internet.

The other way is to have advertising on your site.

In Comes Automated Sales

I guess I have explained that I do not have to anything to make a sale. If I am selling someone else’s product I am not responsible for any of the sales automation, however if it is my own product I am.

At this point I would like to give you a few examples of how I make money while I sleep. (Actually I make money at any time of the day, but this sounds good)

The first way involves me automating the sales process.

Selling Ebooks

In the early days of building websites, I had it in my head that every website needed an ebook to sell. Therefore I created ebooks to sell. Some were from the content already published on the website, and others were written from scratch.

Ok so I created an Ebook called “Simple computer basics ABC 123″ about 5 years ago. I still sell this Ebook today (although it has been updated), and it still makes money while I sleep. I wake up every morning and check my Ebook sales that have come through in the middle of the night. This is fun.

I am actually using Clickbank to automate this sales process for me. Back in the old days, I used to have a Paypal button and I sometimes still do on other products. When it is your own product you are responsible for support to your customer and refunds if any.

Check out my Computer Basics Ebook sales page as an example for you. It is kind of unfinished as I am in the middle of a revamp..But it still makes sales. ??? Also recently I changed my theme to thesis and purchased Hesham Zebida’s Thesis Awesome skin and the conversions have doubled! As you can see it is a very neat sales page.

Affiliate Commissions

Having a website or two is very handy when you are affiliate marketing so if you haven’t taken the plunge, I suggest you build a website soon. Having a website gives me a solid place to add my affiliate links to and hopefully make sales.

Again, I wake up in the morning and check my affiliate accounts. They tick over with money rolling in at any time.

Although I believe that content is not the only king of all this success, I have articles that are at least 4 years old, still making me money today! The reason is that I went back and continually updated them to be relevant for todays standards. I did not let my content waste away like some people do.

Adsense and Amazon

Adsense earnings tick over 24 hours a day, therefore this is a great example of earning money while you sleep. This was how I started making money online and I still do. When I first started out, checking your Adsense earnings was a morning ritual. Some people say you cannot make money with Adsense but those people are the ones that have not been there and done that! Same with making money with Amazon. They are both very serious ways to earn money while you sleep. If you turn your nose up at these methods you are very inexperienced. I mean Adsense does not fit all sites, but for some it is a perfect backdrop.

My Favorite Way to Earn Money While you Sleep?

I could list a 1000 different ways to make money while you sleep and I have mentioned a couple of  good ways above, however I have a favourite. It is selling other peoples products that give me recurring commissions. That means I get paid over and over for the one sale I made. I have written about this on my blog previously. This is the kind of income that gets me excited because I get recurring commission for something I did not create and do not maintain.

Sometimes I wonder if it is worth having a product where support is needed or even upgrades. I relate this to being tied down to something you have to do. Its like having to show up for work or having to supervise your staff. Its all something you have to do…

My problem is I do not want to have to do anything! I am doing all this for freedom. Freedom to do what ever I want, when ever I want, and still earn a decent income. Absolutely no stress.

An example of hands off income

Check out my screen shot below. It might not look like much to you, but this is my type of income that I have been very patiently building. On average I get $20 per sale and this sales gets re-billed every year. I have other commissions that give me $100 flat per sale but they are not recurring so the fun is over.

Think about these earnings I have shown you. This is for one measly product I sell off this website. Soon this product will be earning me $500 a month and then $1000. That will be $12,000 a year but of course my goal is higher than that. The amazing thing is that is just one product!

And I do not have to offer support to any customers! :)

Build a passive income stream

To build a way to earn passive income, initially it does take work. This work will generally be to set-up up a system that will enable you to earn money while you sleep.

If you have some spare cash then buying someone elses passive income system is a great investment. But hey, we all don’t have that luxury.

Examples of systems that earn money while you sleep

#1. Build an authority website

  1. Create exceptional content and promote it
  2. Turn the traffic into money (advertising, affiliate links)
  3. Invite guest posters in
  4. Employ a writer, blog manager, promoter, let it run
  5. hen your site is popular everyone wants to contribute anyway
  6. Sit back and collect the cash

#2. Ebook

  1. Write an exceptional Ebook or Course
  2. Create a website for this
  3. Add this Ebook to Clickbank or Amazon as a Kindle
  4. Organize auto delivery of product
  5. Gather affiliates to sell the book for you
  6. Sit back and collect the cash

These systems are set in place so you do not have to work after the system is set up. You can even setup a website for someone else’s product and do the same thing. As long as the system on the backend is taken care of. Here is an example of a website I made in a few hours about Keyword Winner Review. I really love this simple plugin and thought I would whip up a site about it..

Has this site made money? Yes about 4 sales. I have not done anything to it though, which I should, and I even had to search in Google to find it.. I also could not sign into my WordPress dashboard because I had forgotten my username and password?

Could this site make me money while I sleep? Yes of course, but I would need to invest some time into the site with more content and promotion. Doing something like this also depends on the products shelf life. I was actually thinking of using this for an experiment with article marketing to prove it still works.

How Did I Get to this Stage?

All of this does not happen over night and if you know me, I am always truthful about the hard work it takes to build a successful website business. There is no bullsh*t here. I have been working on my main website for 5 or more years. I didn’t go at it like a bull at a gate either. I was too busy absorbing all the information I needed to become successful in this business.

I have spent all this time creating quality content, promoting it, optimizing it, promoting it again, tweaking sales goals and repairing website errors. I did not sit around thinking or talking about it, I just did it! Everyday I woke up dreaming of new content and how I could monetize it for the future.

I relate my work to building a house. I might only lay one or two bricks a day for my house, but look at what I have now? I have about five finished houses (5 top websites) and many more that I am still laying bricks for. This is all because I took a risk (that’s what I thought at the time) and purchased Hostgator hosting for $4.95 a month. It just sounds too crazy to believe. Now I can make $4.95 with just one Adsense click or 5 times that on affiliate commissions!

The internet never turns off and this means your offers are available 24 hours a days, even when you are snoring your head off!

    It is not impossible to generate a huge amount of money online while you sleep. Almost everything on the internet is automated which makes all business transactions convenient and easy.

    sometimes the ads featured in websites can be a little disgruntling when trying to read or find specific information. Personally – Hard work is what pay’s off at the end. To me there is no shortcut to a long lasting successful business and relationships.

    The thing is, yes, anyone can make money while they sleep. The problem is, not everyone has the patience and the drive to work hard for the money. You just don’t start earning money and then automatically your money starts working for you. It doesn’t work like that. People should understand that you need to first put in a lot of work into it before your money starts working for you.

    When you get into positions with your website where you have lots of traffic for a certain type of person, monetizing with affiliate programs is going to be major in making money while you sleep. The reason why I choose this method over advertising with ads on all my website projects is because it offers much higher earnings per click and still requires you to hold no inventory or do any processing.

    Making money while you sleep is very doable especially if you’re participating in the stock market or online foreign exchange trading, even online gold trading for the matter. But then, these things take a lot of risk. So I guess we need to be careful if we wanna venture on these activities.

    I’ve been article marketing lately in an attempt to get quality traffic to my website. Although it takes a while before my articles are indexed, I feel that it’s time well spent. I also post ads on Craigslist, and am enjoying the “renew” button, which saves a lot of time.

    Hi Mitz, I’ve been making money while I sleep for years also. Some months better than others, but it truely is amazing to think with affiliate marketing you can have these websites online 24/7 producing you income automatically. Of course it takes effort to build a site that get’s sufficient targeted traffic, but in my opinion it’s definately worth it.

    Excellent article and I understand your points. But my question is how did you survive 3 years without making any money?
    How did you pay your bills and eat?
    Or did you already have money socked away to live on for those 3 years?

      No you only need Microsoft word and then save as a PDF file. go and check out mine..that is all I use.. I am writing a massive post about what to do and how to format it.. Taking a while though as I am trying not to forget steps..

    Although from a technical point of view it’s correct to say that we could make money while we sleep, but this come with a price: a huge amount of hard work. In addition, we have to add content on a regular basis, otherwise the money won’t come at the same pace for a long period of time.

      No Amazon earns great.. It is the same with everything, you have to drive the right traffic there. I have experimented with Amazon and got up to $100 a month from one article. It lasted 3 months and dropped off because I stopped promoting the article. It was a very clear cut experiment because I generally do not use Amazon at all. It was just to prove to myself that I could earn with anything I pushed the right traffic towards.

    Making money while you sleep is great and all but it is not that easy to automate. You have to create great websites with a lot of traffic and whose URL is already known around your niche circle. Making your name famous for your articles and posts is important if you want people to constantly come to your site. You then have to create great affiliate links and/or products such as ebooks to generate your income from the traffic. You do have to put a good amount of time before you can actually sleep and make money. Thanks for posting these tips. You are already a good example of someone that is at the prime of their business.

    To be honest most of my earnings have been adsense and some affiliate related but I will need to diversify and go for others such as products, ebooks and selling kindle. It’s possible to make money online, it does work.

    Your struggle for online income is really appreciable and to work only for Adsense is a great risk. They disable account without telling any reason. I think the best way is to earn through affiliate marketing.

    Hey Mitz, thanks for sharing this. Earning money while you sleep is certainly a reality. It is amazing how people will gripe about their jobs or the economy, but they won’t do something to change this. I believe that this post will inspire many people who want to earn income while they sleep.

    Hi Mitz, you explained very detailed in making money online while sleeping and showed to us that’s truth. Yeah, making money online is true, however, it takes a long time to see the first result, and since we get this one, I believe we will work harder to get much more money, even it’s while we are sleeping.

    I think this is the first time that I am commenting on this blog. I am using affiliate marketing and Google adsense to earn money while I am sleeping. A good click will make around $1-3 in Google adsense for me. I never used amazon affiliate to make money. But I’ll try it too.

    Love this post. Affiliate income from membership sites is so cool. Forget Adsense. I can’t make money from that. Yes, I agree. One can make money in your sleep, but it’s all about getting the keyword research right along with the correct niche and the mailing list to sell to.

    I have been using amazon associate for years and found that the revenue is ok but compared with the others it seems very few. now I am trying to use CJ but many of the advertiser disapprove my application. Apart from Amazon, CJ, Adsense (My adsense got banned with no reason), any other great affiliate program?

      They are all great programs but it depends how you promote and what niche you are in… You need targeted traffic to buy your products.

      Targeted traffic to targeted content. That’s how I make money.
      You also need to read through some of the articles on this site as I see you have this advertising in your sidebar.. I basically make $0 from my sidebar. I am happy to have no ads there!
