I did find a recurring commissions website but when I visited the links the websites were dead and gone or they did not have recurring commission. Well that leaves a huge opening there!

As you can see, on this website I am running the Socrates WordPress theme, however I have many websites and many other WordPress theme options. Adding an Extra Navigation Menu to Thesis Custom Functions

Yes I have the Thesis WordPress theme! How could I resist one of the best WordPress themes out there? Anyway do not rush out and buy it because it is fantastic, but not for the newbie WordPress website builder. You really need to know your way around .php and .css if you want to feel good about buying Thesis. I personally think it is wonderful and I am no expert at coding but I do learn quickly. After all, I am a computer geek. Anyway if you are looking for a WordPress theme then definitely check out Elegant themes as they are already designed for you. Thesis is a bare theme where you can customize it until it becomes something.

If you have already purchased Thesis then this tutorial is for you.

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to add a categories menu to your Thesis WordPress Website. This is very easy and a similar tutorial is on the Thesis website but I have added a few extras.

How to add an extra navigation menu in a Thesis blog?

Firstly, here is a screen shot of my Website before I added the categories menu. As you can see it is rather boring and it does have a menu above the Website title. It is grey. I am going to add a categories navigation menu in the space where the arrows are pointing.

To add the categories navigation menu we need to add code to the custom_functions.php.

1.  Click on the thesis menu in the left column. You need to be signed into your dashboard.

2.  Choose Custom file editor from the menu.

3.  Click on the drop down menu to choose the custom_functions.php and then click on edit selected file.

NOTE: You must be careful not to make a mistake on this file. If you do you might have to upload a fresh version to your server to repair the damage.

4.  This is where you add the code. Do not make extra spaces, just paste the code directly on the next line available.

Add an extra navigation menu to thesis:

Paste this code in to your custom_functions.php section as shown above.

This is what my page looks like after I added the code above. But the problem is that it was showing categories that I did not want to show.

To remove links from the navigation menu that you do not want showing simply change the code to this:

I have listed all the pages I do not want showing in this navigation menu. I previously wrote about removing navigation links in Artisteer but this can also apply to thesis and most other Worpdress themes. In that tutorial I am removing a page link from the navigation menu.

To change the color of your navigation menus:

1.  Go to design options on the Thesis menu.

2.  Under Fonts, Colors, and More heading you will see the navigation menu (nav) options.

3.  Press on the plus sign next to it to expand the options.

4.  See the arrows below pointing to colors. I changed them to make my menu blue. I also changed the hover color.

When changing options make sure you press the “Big A** Save Button”.

To move the navigation menu to the top of the header change this code:

To:

add_action('thesis_hook_before_header','cat_nav');

I will add a few more customizations for adding an extra navigation menu in Thesis.

1. You can create a page and make it a static front page instead of having posts.
2. You can make a page and choose the sales page template.

Later I changed my theme to Thesis, another great WordPress theme, however the conversions dropped dramatically. Therefore I had to remodel Thesis to look like Socrates. I got Thesis because I am a Geek but Socrates is a must for non technical people.

I have also started making a sales page WordPress website with Socrates. I got this Clickbank approved on the first shot. Please see the Computer Basics Ebook. Unfortunately I forgot to show you this option of making sales pages in the video. However when you are making a page you can choose to make it a skinny sales page, wide sales page, a page with no sidebars, and so on… Then there are more options to include the header and navigation bars. That way you can just have a header with no navigation on a sales page.

Webmasters often need to remove top menu page navigation to allow them not show a page to their website visitors. It just gives you a choice on which pages or category titles show in the top navigation menu.

What is Artisteer?

Web Design Generator – Artisteer is a program that helps you create website themes and templates without having to know too much php or html. Here is a previous tutorial I posted about using Artisteer. You can watch a video on how to make a website template.

I like to design WordPress Themes with Artisteer and sometimes customizing the theme is a little bit different to other themes I have worked with. In this tutorial I am going to show you how to remove top menu page navigation links and leave only the ones you want. If you have a WordPress theme built using something other than Artisteer then please see this article Remove a page link from the top menu navigation in WordPress.

How to Remove top menu page navigation in an Artisteer WordPress theme?

Most of the time, when removing a page link from the navigation bar you have to edit the header.php file. However with an Artisteer WordPress Theme you need to edit the functions.php file. That is the only major difference. You will find the same or similar code to edit in there. Changing the header.php file in an Artisteer theme will not effect the top nav menu.

1.  Click on the Appearance menu. Then choose Editor.

2.  On the far right there will be a menu of pages with .php on the end. Find the Theme functions page (functions.php) and click on it.

3.  In the Functions.php file look for anything that says list_pages under the heading of /* horizontal menu */

4.  See the screen shot below. Click on it to enlarge.

5.  Where I have circled the code it had this there: wp_list_pages(‘title_li=&sort_column=menu_order’);

6.  I replaced it with: wp_list_pages(‘exclude=3962,4061,4125,3899&title_li=&sort_column=menu_order’);

The numbers that I added in (3962,4061,4125,3899) are page numbers that I want to exclude from the menu. Now this is how I remove top menu page navigation links in Artisteer.

Please note that Artisteer is updated often and this tutorial can become out of date. If you cannot find similar code to this then you might have an upgraded version.

I do not use free themes at all now. There is no need as I have Thesis, Elegant themes and Socrates, which covers all of my needs.

Paid – Best WordPress Theme

Although there are some really great free themes out there, when you start to get multiple websites it is nice to have a top theme. A paid theme with great features that suit you. If you stick to a small number of themes or even just one, you will become an expert at customizing  that theme, and therefore saving time. Many of the paid themes have amazing options inside the dashboard that make it extremely easy to customize. For example you could be using the same theme for all your websites but they can look completely different because of the options available.

Some of these themes are truly amazing. I have already bought the WordPress Remix Theme as it is am amazing business theme that has crazy page templates and options to use. (very detailed though)

Elegant Themes

OMG these themes are amazing. If you go and check out the Elegant Themes Website I am sure you will see something you like. The great thing is that when you pay you get access to more than 50+ absolutely professional themes, not one or two, but all. I cannot say enough about these themes…You just have to see it to believe it. If I was only going to buy one theme package it would be this one!

Ultimate Theme

I do not have this theme but many top bloggers do. I probably would have bought this one if I didn’t already have the Socrates WordPress Theme.

WordPress Remix

I have this installed and it is absolutely fantastic but is difficult in some aspects. This is really for business websites. The customization is amazing but I personally gave up on it as there was too much detail. Sorry guys, great theme but too detailed for me to use for making WordPress websites for a living.

Socraties Theme

I have had Socrates for a while now and what can I say, it is great. It is especially newbie friendly as it slots ads in for you and basically many other things. If I was starting out I would definitely get this theme and start from there. The Socrates theme is a plain theme with amazing functions. You can customize it to make it look amazing, create squeeze pages and sales pages in seconds.
