DoFollow links and nofollow links are the absolute talk of the website town. When you are building WordPress websites you will absolutely run into the phrase “nofollow” which is a link building term and wonder what it means to you? It was unheard of but was invented in these recent few years to indicate a html link that isn’t followed. This does not imply the html link shouldn’t be and is not clickable, because it is. It simply signifies that the link isn’t passing on its full benefit to the website it is pointing to.
Are Dofollow Links More Valuable?
It is better for a website to have more incoming links and fewer outgoing links, therefore we use the “nofollow” attribute. I believe this but…
On the other hand, linking to a well respected website address that is highly related to your content is often seen to be a good thing. After all, webmasters are supposed to deliver the best information for their readers and sometimes this means linking to another site with important information.
the next question is…What is a well respected site according to Google. That is why I wrote this article titled “Should all external links be nofollow? ”
If I wish to discuss a random website I found and I make a hyperlink on my web site pointing to it, the hyperlink should be made “nofollow”. The rationale for this is that I do not wish to pass on my link goodness or link juice onto an internet site that I have no idea or I am not in partnership with.
Lets face it. You have total control when it comes to publishing links within pages and posts but it is harder to control links on comments. In that situation I use the Commentluv Premium WordPress plugin. it lets me control who gets dofollow links and who gets nofollow links. If you are mentioning a well respected brand like WordPress or Coke Cola then it is only right that you link to them as you are clearly talking about them directly.
So which link is more valuable? I would still say a dofollow link is more valuable but you need both for a natural link profile. It would look very odd if you only got dofollow links pointing to your website.
How to Create Dofollow Links
In the html code of your website you can change a link to “nofollow”. You can also get a WordPress plugin to control “dodollow” and “nofollow” links. This is a SEO strategy because it is better to control outbound links from your website and know who you are linking to.
Dofollow links are created when you create anchor text links in your posts and pages.
This is a normal “dofollow” link
This is a “nofollow” link
<a rel=”nofollow” href=”http://www.tips4pc.com”>Tips4pc</a>
I have added rel=”nofollow” to the link.
See the Difference Between Dofollow Links and Nofollow Links?
On Your Own Site
If you need to know if there are dofollow links on your own website, that is easy. All you have to do is go into the html and you will see the html code includes the rel ‘nofollow” attribute.
On Other People’s Sites
The best way to tell if a link is “nofollow” for other websites is to install a free Firefox or Google Chrome plugin called Search Status. Therefore if you want to use this plugin you will have to view the website with the links using Firefox which is a free website browser.
1. Once you have installed Search Status it will have a tiny icon at the bottom right corner of your Firefox screen.
2. Right click on this icon to bring the menu up.
3. Tick the option to highlight Nofollow Links.
4. Now you will see the “Nofollow” links highlighted. See the screen shot below.
See all the pink links are “nofollow” and the ones with no highlight are “dofollow”. The ones I am following are my own websites and others websites that give me a follow link in return. If a person exchanges links and gives me a “nofollow” link then they get the same in return. You can have your own system.
